Hungerford Town Hall
Hungerford is a market town in west Berkshire, 10 miles west of Newbury and within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The town’s historic market status is retained by the significant number of small independent retail and commercial businesses providing visitors and residents alike with personal service across a wide range of products. It is twinned with Ligueil in France.
History

Tutti Men, Hungerford
- Hungerford is the only place in the country to have continuously celebrated Hocktide. This is also known as Tutti Day and always celebrated on the second Tuesday after Easter. In the past it was a celebration of the town’s great patron, John of Gaunt. Today, Hungerford celebrates the end of the town council’s financial and administrative year. Hocktide’s origins are thought to lie in celebrations of King Alfred’s expulsion of the Danes.
- There is no mention of Hungerford in the Domesday Book but the town’s history can be traced back to 1173.
- John of Gaunt served the town well as Lord of the Manor and administered fishing rights along the River Kennet.
