Sherborne is an affluent market town in north west Dorset. It is situated on the River Yeo and on the A30, to the edge of the Blackmore Vale and 6 miles east of Yeovil. Sherborne has a railway station on the main Penzance to Waterloo line making it an attractive town for weekends away from the city.

Sherborne is famous for its abbey, castles, manor house and private schools, many of the buildings are built in the local ‘Ham’ stone.

Sherborne is a founding member of the Douzelage, a town twinning association of towns across the European Union.

History

Sherborne Castle

Sherborne Castle

  • The town was named “scir burne” by the Saxon inhabitants meaning “clear stream” and it was made the capital of Wessex, one of the seven Saxon kingdoms of England.
  • The abbey was originally a Saxon cathedral, then a Bendictine monastery and in modern days a parish church (see link below).
  • The original castle was built by the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Roger de Caen who was also Bishop of Salisbury. It was built as a fortified palace and is now managed by English Heritage
  • Sir Walter Raliegh built a new castle within the parkland of the old castle. This Elizabethan mansion is known as Sherborne Castle today.
  • There has been a school in Sherborne since the time of King Alfred, who was educated in the town.  The educational history of the town has extended to 4 private schools and an international school .
