History

  • The Romans called Cirencester ‘Corinium Dobunnorum’ and it was an important town in Roman times. Cirencester was a large and strategic town and in fact, it was the second largest town in England, after London during this period. Several artefacts from this era are on display in the town’s Corinium Museum and you may also like to visit Chedworth Roman Villa nearby.
  • In the Middle Ages, Cirencester grew rich and prosperous on the wool trade. During the 19th century, the wool industry died out altogether although Cirencester remained a fair sized market town throughout the centuries.
