About Paulton

Holy Trinity,
Paulton is a large former coal mining village located to the north of the Mendip Hills of Somerset. The village has been designated an ‘area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.’
History
- Evidence of coal mining on the Somerset coalfield still exists in and around the village of Paulton with a slag heap or tailings known as “The Batch” in the shape of a volcano in the town.
- The Somerset Coal Canal terminated in Paulton. This narrow canal became a central point for more than 15 local collieries around Paulton, Timsbury and High Littleton, which were all connected to the canal by tramroads.
- In 1839 Charles Dando Purnell opened a family printing business with operations in Radstock, Paulton and Midsomer Norton. Purnells became a name synonymous with the publication of bibles making the company Europe’s biggest printing firm employing 2,000 people at its peak. By the time of closure in December 2005 this had dropped to 400 jobs.
- The village centre war memorial commemorates those who fell in the world wars. There is a second memorial commemorating the location where 23 men were killed on 17 September 1944 in a glider crash en route from RAF Keevil to Arnhem.
