History

St Mary's Church, Saltford

St Mary's Church, Saltford

  • In the 18th and 19th centuries, Saltford was an industrial area, with a series of mills along the Avon Valley, making brass and copper goods. The beginning of the 20th century saw Saltford’s metal industry coming to an end but the Saltford Brassmill remains today.  The mills used waterwheels for power processing and charcoal for heating the metal.  Locally the process developed using local coal in lined furnaces which attracted craftsmen from abroad, bringing varying expertise and ensuring the industry continued.
  • St Mary’s Church is a Norman church and dates back to the 12th century.  Many changes have taken place since but it remains one of the many listed buildings in the village.
  • Saltford Manor House is believed to be the oldest property to be continuously inhabited with features dating back to approximately 1150.
