The Buttercross, Chippenham

Chippenham is twinned with La Fleche in France and Friedberg in Germany. It is one of the West Country’s most dynamic market towns with a population of over 28,000. The combination of the old and the new, the historic architectural gems, modern shopping centres and nearness to some of the country’s greatest houses and historic villages, makes this town midway between Bath and Swindon an ideal location for living, working and visiting.

History  

  • There are believed to have been settlements in the Chippenham region since before Roman times. Remains of Romano-British settlements are visible in the wall behind the former magistrate’s court and recent redevelopments of the town have shown up other evidence of the earliest settlements.   
  • The town has been associated with the food industry for a long time with the Buttercross being built for the sale of local meats and dairy goods. 

Yelde Hall, Chippenham

  • The Yelde Hall is one of very few remaining medieval timber framed buildings in the town and is currently used as the Tourist Information Centre.  It was originally used as a market hall with the meeting room above used for trials and council meetings.  The town jail was below.
