Corsham centre
Originally named Cosseha, there has been a settlement in Corsham since Anglo-Saxon times. Today, Corsham remains a historic market town in northwest Wiltshire. It is at the south western extreme of the Cotswolds, just off the A4 which was formerly the main turnpike road from London to Bristol, between Bath and Chippenham. Corsham is twinned with Jargeau in France. You should be fortunate enough to see the peacocks roaming the town.
History
- Historically, Corsham was a centre for agriculture and later, the wool industry, and it remains a centre for quarrying Bath Stone. Corsham contains several notable historic buildings, such as the stately home of Corsham Court which was used in World War II and the Cold War as a major administrative and manufacturing centre for the Ministry of Defence. There were numerous establishments above ground and in the old quarry tunnels.

Corsham's historic buildings
- Corsham inspired Charles Dickens to write The Pickwick Papers, and create the character Moses Pickwick. Pickwick, once an adjoining hamlet, gave its name to Moses Pickwick an abandoned baby, this name later being seen on a carrier’s cart by Charles Dickens who used it for his Pickwick Papers.
-
The early 21st century has seen growth in Corsham’s role in the film industry with locations used in The Remains of the Day, Wives and Daughters, Lark Rise to Candleford and many more.
