About Pewsey

Kennet and Avon Cancal, Pewsey
Pewsey is a large village (often considered a small town) in the county of Wiltshire, located approximately 80 miles west of London. It is close to the M4 motorway, the A303 and the Great Western main line railway which all makes Pewsey is popular as a location with commuters.
Pewsey holds the oldest carnival in Wiltshire during two weeks in September.
History

Vale of Pewsey
- There is evidence of a settlement at Pewsey the 6th century.
- In 1764, the rector at that time was responsible for building of the first bridge over the River Avon. The same rector welcomed the founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley as a preacher to Pewsey Church.
- The arrival of the Great Western Railway in 1862 allowed fast travel to London and to the west of Pewsey, this remains a significant service today. The Kennet and Avon canal already passed through the town.
- The first White Horse was cut in approx 1785 and was replaced in 1937. It is one of the smaller horses in Wiltshire.
