Royal Wootton Bassett is a small market town located 6 miles southwest of Swindon in northern Wiltshire It is less formally known as Wootton Bassett. The town is twinned with Blain in France. Royal Wootton Bassett also has strong links with the armed forces and a significant RAF population due to the nearby RAF Lyneham.
History

Town Hall, Royal Wootton Bassett
- Dating back to Saxon times, 681AD is the oldest recorded history of Wootton Bassett which was then known as Wodeton.
- Around 1200AD, Ian Bassett (whose signature can be seen on the preface of the Magna Carta) expanded the town so much that his name was added as a suffix and evolved to what was known as Wootton Bassett.
- Granted permission by Henry III to hold a market in 1219, the town has always been a busy meeting place for local farmers and was once larger than its near neighbour Swindon. The town’s most famous landmark, the old Town Hall, was built in the 17th century, to house the council, market store room and ‘Blind House’ which was an overnight lock up for the drunks. The renovated building now serves as a museum.
- Royal patronage was awarded to the town in 2011 in recognition of the military funeral repatriations that paraded through the town after servicemen were carried home through RAF Lyneham.
