About Westbury

Westbury White Horse
Westbury is a town in the west of Wiltshire and most famous for the Westbury White Horse. It is located 4 miles south of the county town of Trowbridge and 18 miles south east of the city of Bath. The town has two railway lines creating a crossing point for the Cardiff to Portsmouth line with the Paddington to Penzance line that uses Intercity 125 trains. Westbury is twinned with the towns of Chateau-du-Loir in France and Westbury in Tasmania, Australia.
Westbury is also home to local directory publisher, dentons directories ltd, with its offices located at Bridge House. The company was originally established in Bath in 1967.
History

The Old Town Hall, Westbury
- It is sometimes claimed locally that the White Horse was first cut into the chalk face as long ago as 878AD, to commemorate the victory of King Alfred the Great over the Danes in the Battle of Ethandun (probably, but not certainly, at the nearby village of Edington). However, no evidence has yet been found for the existence of the Westbury White Horse before the 1720s and the current White Horse dates from 1778. In the 1950s, the horse was concreted and painted white to ease maintenance. In recent years, there have been calls to clean or paint the “old grey mare” and a renovation began in May 2006.
- Westbury was sometimes known as Westbury-under-the-Plain to distinguish it from other towns of the same name. Westbury probably takes its name from being the most western of the communities on the north-western side of Salisbury Plain.
- The annual Westbury Sheep Fair was held until 1940, this brought a lot of trade to the town.
- Since 1949, the town has been home to the Army Officer Selection Board located at Leighton House.
